Q: When is it?
A: Ellipsis Open Mic happens on the second Thursday of every month, except March.
In March, Ellipsis Poetry is involved in Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Q: What time?
A: Doors open at 6:00 PM. Poets are on stage from 7:00 PM.
There have been times when doors have been opened a little early to let folks in while we are still setting up. There have been times when doors have opened a little late because of unforeseen circumstances affecting the venue. But in every case, Jazz and/or Pam have been on the scene to reassure and explain as best they can.
We strive to start on time. However, there have also been times when technical issues have delayed us. These are situations are rare.
Q: Where is it?
A: Arthur Art Bar. 66 Currie St, Adelaide. It is a reclaimed art deco building, once a furniture store, across from Topham Mall.
Q: Is the venue accessible?
A: Arthur Art Bar has one small step into the building at the front. No ramp.
There is a step onto the stage, but we have an off stage mic set up and anyone is able to use this mic on request instead of being on the stage.
The toilets are upstairs at Arthur Art Bar. There is an accessible toilet in Topham Mall, 100m away.
Q: How can I get there?
Car parking can be problematic in the CBD and so public transport is recommended.
Arthur Art Bar is a 500m walk from Adelaide Railway Station.
Arthur Art Bar is a 350m walk from Pirie St Tram Stop
All the Currie St bus routes will get you almost to the front door.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: It is free to listen at Ellipsis Open Mic. If you would like to read, that costs $5.
Q: What if I want to read but I can’t afford the $5?
A: If you genuinely cannot afford the fee, please come and talk to either Pam or Jazz. We do not want anyone silenced for the sake of money.
Q: What is my $5 used for?
A: Open Mic fees are the only regular income that Ellipsis Poetry has to cover expenses. All money collected in any way are used to fund Ellipsis Poetry activities. Jazz and Pam take no payment for themselves.
Q: How do I sign up to read?
A: You can sign up on the night. Sign up opens at 6:00 PM and continues until the sheet is full. There are 20 places and poets will be called to the stage in the order they appear on the sheet.
Q: Can I reserve a place ahead of time?
A: No. You need to be present at the venue before your name is placed on the sign up sheet.
Q: How long can I speak for?
A: Five minutes. This will be timed and a bell will sound when you have 30 seconds left. We expect poets to be respectful of others waiting to read and not exceed their time limit.
Q: Do you have longer spots for feature poets?
A:. No. Ellipsis Open Mic is open mic only. There are not feature artists. Everyone has 5 minutes each.
Q: Can I buy a second spot and have 10 minutes?
A; No. Five minutes. That’s all.
Q: Do I need to provide trigger warnings?
A: The host will give a general trigger warning at the beginning of evening. If you are addressing topics that you think may not be covered by this, or you have particularly graphic content, please provide your own specific trigger warning.
Q: What’s the deal with the zines, the trading table, the book case?
Q: My question isn’t here. What do I do now?
For the love of poetry…
